Description	Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells are major components of the human retina, a multi-layered lining of the rear surface of the eye. They are different from many other types of epithelia in the polarity of a number of proteins, and their apical plasma membrane is in contact with the extracellular matrix rather than devoid of matrix like other epithelial cell types. They are critical in the development and maintenance of adjacent photoreceptors in retina, playing a key role in maintaining normal vision and supports photo-transduction due to its anatomic location between the photoreceptors and the choriocapillaries. These cells are ideal models for research on ocular diseases and study of cell-matrix interactions, gene regulation and tissue development.

Propagation	Use of PriCoat? T25 Flasks (G299) or . Applied Cell Extracellular Matrix (G422) is required for cell adhesion to the culture vessels. Grow cells in ECM-coated culture vessels with the following conditions. The base medium for this cell line is Prigrow I medium available in ABM, Cat. No. TM001. To make the complete growth medium, add the following components to the base medium: fetal bovine serum (TM999) to a final concentration of 10% and Penicillin/Streptomycin(G255). Atmosphere: air, 95%; Carbon dioxide (CO₂), 5%.
